Remembering What Cannot Be, Yet Which Must Be - a November 11 Reflection - please post

By Kevin D. Annett

As a boy in Winnipeg, it was a day when I could show off in my boy scout uniform for all the girls, and we got the day off from school; so it was indeed a memorable time. But exactly what and who I was to remember on November 11 never was clear to me, even when it was carefully explained by parents and teachers.

For I was never there in the carnage at the Somme, or Normandy, or Vimy Ridge, although my grand dad was, and my unknown, martyred Uncle Bob who gave up his life jacket for a fellow torpedoed sailor, and who died for his act. Yet still, I was to feel something for at least the soldiers who never returned home, men who meant nothing to me, even when they were my own kin.

And so our annual Remembrance Day service was for me the same kind of showy pretense that I received every Sunday in church, where I was to mourn the tortured Jesus and rejoice in his victory over the grave, even when I never knew the guy.

And yet over time, I sensed some deeper wisdom in the pretense. For we do carry a collective memory of our dead, greater than any one of us; and from our earliest times, we have honored our fallen simply by recalling them, and keeping alive that which neither blade nor bullet can destroy.

That said, it was all still hearsay to my pre-pubescent self. Every November 11, I was expected to believe the stories of my elders, and share their grief, and memories. And with the absolute blessing of our local clergyman at Westworth United Church, who always held his own Memorial Day service, I was also to know without a doubt that the slaughter had all been very necessary.

I believed it. Like most other boys, I looked forward to each November 11. For how easily was I caught up in the thrill of the bagpipes and the drums, and entranced by the brotherhood of belonging displayed by all the aging, uniformed veterans who still stood so firm, together, in a devotion that none of us ever knew in our crowded, daily lives. I was being recruited, even then, but into what and by whom I still did not know.

“I’m just glad you’ll never have to go away to a war” my mother would say to me, like clockwork, at the end of every November 11 as she tucked me into bed. I always felt so let down by her words, and by her ignorance of what was stirring within me.

At six years old, and at twelve, I dreamt of battle, I played war, I organized all the local kids, girls included, into squads and recon units that probed the local neighborhood for shelter, and the right terrain for battle. I always stood poised on the edge, holding myself in readiness for an engagement that everything in me strained towards as if my very soul depended on it, which as it turns out, it did. And yet never did I know why I was so.

During our summer trips to my grandparent’s place in Edmonton, I’d sit at the kitchen table and listen again and again to Grandpa Ross’s tales from the World War 1 battlefront.

Gramp would speak of trench raids against the Germans, of the long, cold nights and all the lice, but also of his first Christmas eve in Belgium in 1915, when he and the enemy met beyond the wire and shared songs, and cheap booze, and promised not to be the first ones to resume the shooting.

The comradery with the krauts must have worked, Grandpa used to chortle to me from behind his pipe, for two years later at Vimy Ridge, a German soldier saved his life during battle, enduring capture by the Canadians to carry in Grandpa’s wounded and unconscious self to his own lines, and safety – and allowing me to be born.

I always cried when Grandpa told that story, just like I did when our family spoke so reverentially of young Uncle Bob and his self-sacrifice for a stranger. And it was to that innocent place in my own heart that I always went during every Remembrance Day service, recalling that which I could not possibly have known, if memory was simply an individual thing: that the highest calling of the warrior is not conquest, but sacrifice; not assault, but heroism and integrity.

I have been blessed throughout my days to have never been relinquished by that knowledge, and to allow it to take me to the graves of many innocents who have been slaughtered in domestic wars, and find there a remembrance of these unknown ones who must be remembered.
The unhealable pain of any war, and why there never are victors, is that the first casualty is always our own innocence and best hopes. And that realization struck me with a vengeance last month when I stood for the first time over the mass grave of children at a place paid for by us, run by us, and hidden by us.

Veterans can rarely return to the battlefields they survived, and where their own hopes, and buddies, lie buried. And nor have the survivors of the longest war in human history – the one we have waged against indigenous peoples – easily come to those graves where more than 50,000 of their little relatives lie. For we, who put them there, have not yet remembered our own story, and honor, and thus we have not the courage, yet, to stand there with them.

It will come, one day, but only when we truly remember that which cannot be, and yet which must be; and somehow, in the remembering, change.

Finally ...

Vancouver Police Chief Jim Chu issues threat to Occupy movement to disperse peacefully, and warns "illegitimate protestors" to depart

News Item: November 9, 2011
On “Legitimate Protestors”, and Illegitimate Cops:
A Perplexed Note from Rev. Kevin Annett to Vancouver Top Cop Jim Chu, following his threats against Occupy Vancouver members

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwxw75d85yVb_DmPy1Ry20ZSG883ZR5NyxvYGBbqTFomOcMFqwCMUc8-_DrstseYfb-D6T66FVYSydiCcZUennsED_ndasJ3Bt8605fLGwhA6prSjYqj_1HQoDSDfFysK7f1BtzKyCWEa9/s1600/Jim_Chu.jpg http://backofthebook.ca/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Kevin-Annett.jpg
Dear Jim,
Somebody must be on your ass these days, Jim, and I don’t mean your political bosses, or the usual crowd of real estate sharks and drug lords who call the tune here in our beautiful city.
You seem to be losing it, frankly, Jim, now that you’ve started threatening to jail all the young kids who are giving peace a chance down at the art gallery: folks you even have started labeling as either “legitimate” or “illegitimate” protestors.

So, what makes a protest “legitimate”, in your weltanschung, Jim? I can hear the words “peaceful and orderly” forming on your lips. Well, I’ve been at Occupy Vancouver most of the days since it began, and I’ve seen nothing but peace, order, love and good will from the crowd of occupiers – including from those more strident militants whom you are now casting in such a shadowy and suspicious light.

As somebody once said, Jim, we don’t see the world the way it is, but the way we are; and so it’s kind of revealing that you’d use that curious designation of “legitimacy” to discern what’s up in the Occupy Vancouver camp. I say revealing, because many of us have come to view the Vancouver Police Department according to the same designation.

What makes a cop legitimate, Jim? Read my lips: he and she is a servant of the people, a protector of the innocent, and one who maintains the safety and well being of everybody.
By that definition, Jim, I haven’t run into a lot of legitimate cops in the downtown east side, where I do a lot of my community work. Most of the boys and girls in blue down there spend their time intimidating or clobbering homeless Indians or young prostitutes, if they’re not cruising around doing nothing.
I wouldn’t call that good police work, but it is an excellent way to maintain the kind of violence and crime needed to drive out local merchants and residents, and crash the property prices for the benefit of all those hungry, off shore real estate sharks who I’m sure you know nothing about.
And let’s not talk about your own effectiveness at tackling the drug scene, here in the drug capital of Canada. Years ago, in my first stint as a street minister along east Hastings, I noticed right away how drug dealing goes on openly and constantly on the very doorstep of the Vancouver Police department on Main street: a pattern that's never changed.
Later, when I learned how a lot of the Asian narcotics are unloaded directly off the false-hulled ships at Ballantyne Pier with the help of your own officers, I wised up pretty quickly to who and what the Vancouver cops are actually serving.

And as for all the missing aboriginal women, let’s not go there. You know very well the names of your officers who play the “Hooker Game” of drugging and raping women in our neighborhood. Two of your boys even made a bundle taking a bunch of native women on a one-way trip out to the Pickton serial killer farm, and a lot of us know the names of those dirty cops. But I’m sure you’ve never heard of that, either.

So anyway, Jim, where are all the legitimate Vancouver police?
Having attempted to be a genuine clergyman in a corrupt church, I personally know the fate of any good man or woman who tries to do an honest and effective job amidst criminals. In a word, we get shown the door because, to quote New York cop Frank Serpico, “The clean ones can never be trusted.”

I know the score, Jim, as you do, otherwise you wouldn’t be tolerated by your bosses. So I do understand why you see red when the Occupiers start questioning the power structure here in Sin City, and why you project your own guilt-ridden sense of personal illegitimacy onto them.

Hell, I’m a clergyman. I deal with guys like you all the time. What you need is a stint in a healing circle: say, a 12 step “Mediocrities Anonymous” group for wannabe legitimate cops, if you like.

I’d offer to help you set up such a group for all the men and women on your farce (sorry, I mean, force) who do indeed aspire to become real live police people someday. But my hands are full right now dealing with all the fear and violence your words are instilling among the Occupiers: those dreamers and lovers who are imagining a good and just world – even here in Vancouver.

You might consider joining us. But then, you'd lose your job.

Your call, Jim.

sincerely,

Kevin............................................................................................

Tribunal Launched, Churches Banned from Communities

An International Media Advisory from the International Tribunal into Crimes of Church and State (ITCCS)
Issued Thursday September 15, 2011 11 am GMT
London, UK:
The ITCCS joins with many survivors of torture around the world today as we formally inaugurate an international inquiry and trial into crimes against humanity by church and state.
The Elders of our Tribunal have commenced our campaign by issuing a Banishment Proclamation against the churches responsible for the torture and murder of our children, which is reprinted below, and will be posted and read publicly across the world this Sunday, September 18.
For the next three months, our network in Canada, the United States, Australia, Ireland, England, the Netherlands and Belgium, Italy, Germany, Slovenia, and other nations will be documenting crimes committed against children, indigenous people and other innocents by the Roman Catholic and Protestant churches and their associates in government.
Our work will culminate in a final report and documentary film containing the evidence required to indict these bodies for genocide and crimes against humanity.
The next phase of our work, commencing early in January, 2012, will involve the trial and sentencing of those groups and persons responsible for these crimes.
We welcome the recent efforts to criminally prosecute Pope Joseph Ratzinger for his personal complicity in child abuse and trafficking, and we will join with other groups of survivors in Rome, outside the Vatican, at a mass protest at 12 noon on Monday, October 31, 2011.
We will also be working with politicians in the European Parliament to seek sanctions and indictments against Canada and its churches for genocide, based on new forensic evidence we have recently obtained from three separate mass graves of Indian children who were killed or died in church-run residential schools across Canada.
Our ITCCS forums will be open to the public and the media, who are free and encouraged to share and broadcast our evidence to the world.
Please stay posted to this site for more updates and news of our tribunal: www.itccs.org . Or contact our secretary, Kevin Annett, at hiddenfromhistory1@gmail.com , or through 386-323-5774 in the United States.

PUBLIC BANISHMENT ORDER

Issued against the Corporations known as the Roman Catholic Church, Anglican Church, and United Church of Canada

By Elders in Council from the Inuit, Cree, Metis, Mohawk, Anishnabe, Basque and Gaelic Nations under traditional and sovereign Land Law Jurisdiction

As of this day, Sunday, September 18, 2011, your organizations, their clergy and officers, are forever banished from our territories and lands, and your property and wealth are claimed and re-possessed for the use and benefit of all our people.

Your right to operate on our land has been forfeited by your rape, torture, and murder of our children, by your refusal to change and do justice, and by your betrayal of your own faith and public trust.

Depart, Now and Forever
If you continue to operate on our land after September 18, 2011, your clergy and officials will be in a state of criminal trespass and public mischief, and will be subject to immediate arrest and detainment by our Common Law Peace Officers.
We call upon all the members of these churches to honor this Banishment Order by withdrawing their financial and material support for these criminal corporations posing as religious bodies, lest they be found guilty of complicity with these crimes.
This Banishment Order will be enforced through direct, non-violent actions by our people to peacefully occupy the church properties of these corporations, and use them to house the homeless and feed the hungry.
We invoke the Great Law of Peace and the Sovereignty of our respective Nations as we proclaim the Permanent Expulsion and Banishment from our communities of the Roman Catholic Church, Inc., the Church of England, Inc. (Anglican-Episcopalian), and the United Church of Canada, Inc.
