So, what makes a protest “legitimate”, in your weltanschung, Jim? I can hear the words “peaceful and orderly” forming on your lips. Well, I’ve been at Occupy Vancouver most of the days since it began, and I’ve seen nothing but peace, order, love and good will from the crowd of occupiers – including from those more strident militants whom you are now casting in such a shadowy and suspicious light.
I wouldn’t call that good police work, but it is an excellent way to maintain the kind of violence and crime needed to drive out local merchants and residents, and crash the property prices for the benefit of all those hungry, off shore real estate sharks who I’m sure you know nothing about.
And let’s not talk about your own effectiveness at tackling the drug scene, here in the drug capital of Canada. Years ago, in my first stint as a street minister along east Hastings, I noticed right away how drug dealing goes on openly and constantly on the very doorstep of the Vancouver Police department on Main street: a pattern that's never changed.
Later, when I learned how a lot of the Asian narcotics are unloaded directly off the false-hulled ships at Ballantyne Pier with the help of your own officers, I wised up pretty quickly to who and what the Vancouver cops are actually serving.
On “Legitimate Protestors”, and Illegitimate Cops:
A Perplexed Note from Rev. Kevin Annett to Vancouver Top Cop Jim Chu, following his threats against Occupy Vancouver members
Dear Jim,
Somebody must be on your ass these days, Jim, and I don’t mean your political bosses, or the usual crowd of real estate sharks and drug lords who call the tune here in our beautiful city.
You seem to be losing it, frankly, Jim, now that you’ve started threatening to jail all the young kids who are giving peace a chance down at the art gallery: folks you even have started labeling as either “legitimate” or “illegitimate” protestors.
As somebody once said, Jim, we don’t see the world the way it is, but the way we are; and so it’s kind of revealing that you’d use that curious designation of “legitimacy” to discern what’s up in the Occupy Vancouver camp. I say revealing, because many of us have come to view the Vancouver Police Department according to the same designation.
What makes a cop legitimate, Jim? Read my lips: he and she is a servant of the people, a protector of the innocent, and one who maintains the safety and well being of everybody.
By that definition, Jim, I haven’t run into a lot of legitimate cops in the downtown east side, where I do a lot of my community work. Most of the boys and girls in blue down there spend their time intimidating or clobbering homeless Indians or young prostitutes, if they’re not cruising around doing nothing. I wouldn’t call that good police work, but it is an excellent way to maintain the kind of violence and crime needed to drive out local merchants and residents, and crash the property prices for the benefit of all those hungry, off shore real estate sharks who I’m sure you know nothing about.

And as for all the missing aboriginal women, let’s not go there. You know very well the names of your officers who play the “Hooker Game” of drugging and raping women in our neighborhood. Two of your boys even made a bundle taking a bunch of native women on a one-way trip out to the Pickton serial killer farm, and a lot of us know the names of those dirty cops. But I’m sure you’ve never heard of that, either.
So anyway, Jim, where are all the legitimate Vancouver police?
Having attempted to be a genuine clergyman in a corrupt church, I personally know the fate of any good man or woman who tries to do an honest and effective job amidst criminals. In a word, we get shown the door because, to quote New York cop Frank Serpico, “The clean ones can never be trusted.”I know the score, Jim, as you do, otherwise you wouldn’t be tolerated by your bosses. So I do understand why you see red when the Occupiers start questioning the power structure here in Sin City, and why you project your own guilt-ridden sense of personal illegitimacy onto them.
Hell, I’m a clergyman. I deal with guys like you all the time. What you need is a stint in a healing circle: say, a 12 step “Mediocrities Anonymous” group for wannabe legitimate cops, if you like.
I’d offer to help you set up such a group for all the men and women on your farce (sorry, I mean, force) who do indeed aspire to become real live police people someday. But my hands are full right now dealing with all the fear and violence your words are instilling among the Occupiers: those dreamers and lovers who are imagining a good and just world – even here in Vancouver.
You might consider joining us. But then, you'd lose your job.
Your call, Jim.
sincerely,
Kevin............................................................................................
